Why do switch contacts burn out quickly when an LED strip is connected?

Ildar asks:
I use an expensive LED strip 6 meters long to illuminate the room. The problem is that the switch contacts burn out very quickly. Which device should be used so that the switch does not switch high currents?
The answer to the question:
LED strip, of course, 12V and you put the switch on the 12V line? Put it before the power supply on a 220V line - it will be the same, but the currents will decrease by an order of magnitude. Or, if the switch is in the 12V circuit, put a normal automotive relay and connect the relay winding with the switch, and turn on the LED strip through its power contacts.
