The difference between three phases from one

Please tell me and if it’s not difficult to explain in simple terms, what is the difference between the three phases and one. Clear business 220 V and what pluses and minuses do they have? And is it possible to pull three phases into an apartment? And what will happen if we interconnect the three phases?

Why use one phase - cheap and easy. When this standard was developed, the main emphasis was placed on simplicity and cheapness. When without unnecessary alterations in the private and industrial sectors, generated capacities can be used. The advantage of three phases over one is the large conductive power on the same section of the wire, as well as the ability to connect to three phases of electrical machines. Currently, this advantage is negated due to phase inverters of motor control.

And if you connect the three phases, you get a short circuit.
