Is it possible to put a voltage regulator on the compressor?

I have a compressor for the aquarium, but it does not have a power regulator. Is it possible to put a voltage regulator 0-220 volts or a regulator of domestic lamps in front of the compressor? And with this we regulate the air supply. How smooth will the adjustment be? And which regulator should I take? Specifications: power: 20 W, voltage: 220-240 V, productivity: 20 l / min.

A dimmer can be used to adjust the speed of the commutator motor. If the motor is asynchronous, then its rotation speed is regulated in a different way - by changing the frequency, in household appliances such adjustment is not applied. It is highly likely that the connection of the household lighting controller to the compressor will end with the failure of the compressor itself or the controller.
