What to do if the electric kettle does not turn off when boiling?

An electric kettle is an obligatory attribute of all offices and industrial change houses. This warm friend will warm in winter, relieve fatigue on a weekday, share homesickness at dinner, and will also become an occasion to take a break during a difficult working day. However, like any device, it can fail. After collecting water and turning on the device in the network, while running away for a couple of minutes to call colleagues for tea, you can return and find a Finnish sauna, which was caused by a steaming electric kettle. In this article, we will understand why the kettle does not turn off when boiling and how to fix it with our own hands.

Reasons for the malfunction

If the kettle does not turn off when boiling water, then the causes of the malfunction may be:

  • its cover is not closed;
  • large clearance between the cover and the housing;
  • no filter, or unevenly located;
  • scale formation on the walls.
  • a breaker or a bimetallic plate that affects it has broken.

The process of boiling photo

Below we will consider the repair instructions for the kettle, which does not turn off itself when boiling. If you are ready to disassemble the device and try to repair it yourself, read below what you need to do.

How to fix it with your own hands?

The electric kettle is designed so that when water boils, steam is collected under the lid and reaching a certain concentration, it is sent to a special department in which the switch is located. The latter, in turn, automatically opens the button when heated, thereby disconnecting the kettle from the network. You can clearly see the design of the device in the diagram below:

Scheme

The first step is to inspect the electric kettle, perhaps in a hurry and in anticipation of a break, a work colleague did not close the lid tightly, or an uneven filter prevented the lid from closing tightly. Please note that the open lid is the most common reason that the kettle does not turn off when boiling.

Cover open

If everything is in order with this, then it is worth looking into the inside of the appliance. On the side of the handle, there is an opening between the cover and the wall for the removal of steam to the switch. It must be clean, without barriers and traffic jams from scale. In old electric kettles, the hole is small and very often clogs, as a result of which the appliance does not turn itself off when boiling water. New models do not have this drawback, so if you want to replace the device, we recommend that you read our tips on choosing an electric kettle for home.

If you examined everything in order and did not find the reason, most likely the electric kettle does not turn off automatically when boiling due to the switch. To get to it, you have to disassemble the device almost completely. To do this, unscrew all the screws on the bottom cover, remove it, unscrew the screws on the handle, neatly without damaging the latches, also remove it. Try to remember the sequence of your actions so that after repair you can quickly assemble the case.

Disassembly technique

We draw your attention to the fact that the design of the switch does not provide for repair and intervention, so only replacing this unit with a similar one will allow you to fix the electric kettle with your own hands.

Why do we recommend replacement, not repair?There is no guarantee that the device will work correctly, as well as before the breakdown. As a result - due to forgetfulness, hoping for automation, there will be a complete boiling of water from the apparatus left unattended, which will entail a risk of fire.

If, nevertheless, at your own risk, you want to repair the kettle, which does not turn off for a long time when boiling, then you need to get to the switch and visually inspect it first. If the contacts are burnt, clean them with fine sandpaper. You can learn more about the repair in the video below:

Repair Technology

By the way, a failed button can even cause the electric kettle to shut off early without heating the water to a boil. In this case, you need to act according to a similar technique - either we change it or repair it.

The kettle is assembled in the reverse order. Before plugging it in, draw water and make sure there are no leaks. Perhaps during the repair the seal was shifted. Repeat disassembly and put the gasket back in place. That's all I wanted to tell you about this issue. We hope you now know why the kettle does not turn off when boiling and how to repair it with your own hands.

    Wonderful article! With the help of it, I myself fixed the kettle, which stopped turning off after I took it apart, because it did not hold the lid in the raised state. The lid still did not hold, but it also stopped turning off, because I had completely disassembled it. After your article, I dismantled it again and found a piece of rubber tube that had fallen out earlier and I just carefully put it back. It turns out she connected the tube you wrote about with a plate that turns off the kettle. And I managed to attach it back. Thank you very much!
